Kananaskis - Spray Lakes - Canmore loop : January 10, 2010

I awoke this morning after another great night of sleep thanks to the remainder of my cold I have. I felt great this morning, and even better when my room-mate told me it was a beautiful warm morning! I did some tidying up around the house, then figured HEY! I've been inside for a couple of days (excluding yesterday) with a cold so I'm going to get out and take some photos! Plus it helps gets my mind off things and lowers my stress level :)
I decided I'd drive down Highway 40 through Kananaskis country. This meandering, popular highway, weaves through the mountains, by Kananaskis Village and Nakiska (which is where they held the downhill skiing for the 1988 winter Olympics). At this time of year, the "Highwood Pass" is closed via a snow gate. I saw some ravens feeding on a dead coyote at the side of the road (obviously "road kill"), but again, like last weekend, the normally dosile ravens wouldn't stay feeding when I stopped my car and got out. Then, the only other wildlife sighting down the "40" was one young mountain sheep. When I turned onto the Spray Lakes road, I was hoping to see some moose as I've seen an increasing number down this road in the winter. Luckily, I saw one near the Chester Lake/Sawmill area. At the time, I didn't realize she was pregnant until I saw the photos on my monitor at home, but it was well worth the effort of struggling through almost waist high snow. A group of snow-shoers were at their car and I told them about the moose. They were quite happy I did that, and I told them that I really needed a pair of their snow-shoes as the snow was waist deep. They laughed, but brought out their point and shoot cameras. It's amazing that people, although out in the wilderness, don't see the wildlife. Although I do have to admit - those moose blend in VERY WELL and I have been extremely lucky to see the ones I have seen. More photos from today are on my photostream at http://www.flickr.com/photos/nyphotosca
Enjoy! And thanks again for tuning in!
Cheers!

Old Barns - January 9th, 2010

Happy New Year!!! Yes, 2010, a new year, is upon us. I can't wait to see what this years trips have install.

The last couple of days I've been under the weather with a bit of a cold, but today was a nice +7 celcius, so I wasn't going to waste it indoors!

I headed out on a trip to take some photos of some old barns and old abandoned houses that litter the Alberta country side. I went from Calgary, north to Innisfail, East towards Big Valley, south on Highway 21, all the way back to Calgary. Photos from today's trip should be on my flickr photostream, tonight.

I'm hoping to bring along some new "guests" on some of my phototrips this year. Not only to help educate about photography, but also to show people the lovely country here in Alberta, and to educate people, even more, on wildlife.

I hope you continue to follow my adventures!

Cheers!

Neil
